Industrial Uses Of Brine

Introduction

Brine is a product that is used in many different applications. It is totally over salt-saturated water. It is something that is very common even though you probably are unaware that it is even around you. It can be made in many different saturations for many different products.

What is Brine?

Brine, in short, is basically water that is totally oversaturated with salt. It has many uses and is seen all around your home and workplace. Although you probably don’t know it. There are many common uses of brine all the way from home products all the way to industrial uses.

Common Uses of Brine

There are quite a few uses for brine. In different concentrations, it used in many different products

Road Salting

One place that you will see brine is during the winter. During heavy snow or ice storms, cities will drop a mixture of brine onto the road. It helps melt the ice and make the roads safer to drive on. It is very common on the road in areas where stopping is necessary. Although it does make the roads safer, it can destroy paint on the sides of vehicles.

Soaps

Another place that brine is common is in soaps. Clothing soaps and dish soaps often have brine in them. This is what helps grind the dirt out of the clothing. It also helps keep the soap together in all of the elements so that the water doesn’t separate from the soap.

Clothing Dying

In large brine for industrial tanks applications, brine can be used to dye clothing. In large dying processes brine is very common. So in companies that are dying large amounts of clothing at a time, like a large industrial clothing company, will utilize brine in the process.

OilField Work

Brine is super common in the oilfield industry. It is great for hand soaps and body soaps when a worker has been doing heavy dirty work. But it is also very common to be used in the drilling process. It is often pumped down into the drill to help break down the dirt faster and get to the oil easier and faster.

Water Softening

Another thing that brine is often used is to soften water. In homes that are on their own wells, it is often that the water is very hard. By hard, meaning that it has many minerals in it that can be damaging to the skin and body. So brine can be used to soften the water and remove some of the minerals.

Brine In the Environment

Brine can be very damaging to the environment if it is not disposed of correctly. It can be damaging to the soil. Oilfields get bad reputations because of the pump the brine into the soil. Salt can damage the soil and make it erode easier. It also makes it very hard to grow anything in the soil once brine has been put into the soil.

So What Do We Do?

It is very important that brine gets disposed of correctly. The rough process of disposing of brine starts with a desalination process. That makes the water into freshwater. This is done in a couple of different ways. One of these ways is through deep good injection or through sewer desalination. One other common way is through open water wells. Basically, the sun bakes the water away and what is left is the salt. These are just a couple of ways to dispose of the brine for industrial tanks.

Conclusion

Brine can be used for many things but when used in industrial applications needs to be disposed of correctly. Check out these facts on the brine.
